Abbiamo chiesto a Bettina McDowell, General Manager dell’International Water Mist Association (IWMA), qualche dettaglio in più sulla Conferenza internazionale, sugli argomenti ed i temi che saranno sviluppati durante la due giorni di lavori.

A chi si rivolge l’International Water Mist Conference? Quanti visitatori pensate di raggiungere quest’anno?
Abbiamo 150 biglietti in vendita e speriamo che tutto vada per il meglio fino alla chiusura della fase di registrazione, il 18 ottobre. Ci piacerebbe accogliere un’ampia varietà di professionisti alla Conferenza. Ci saranno sicuramente ricercatori, fabbricanti, rappresentanti di compagnie di assicurazione, rappresentanti di altre associazioni di protezione antincendio, rappresentanti di organismi di certificazione, vigili del fuoco, ecc.
Quali sono le novità di questa edizione e quali sono gli argomenti più importanti?
L’attenzione si concentrerà molto sugli incendi che negli ultimi anni hanno scioccato di più il mondo: Grenfell e Notre Dame. Abbiamo alcuni oratori che parleranno di edifici di grande altezza, coperture dei tetti, edifici storici e beni culturali. Queste presentazioni saranno seguite da una Tavola Rotonda dal titolo: “Grenfell, Notre Dame – Come può la nebbia d’acqua aiutare a prevenire la perdita di vite umane, posti di lavoro e proprietà”? “
Perché questa scelta di trattare proprio l’incendio di Notre Dame? In che modo questo incidente potrebbe essere messo in relazione con la tecnologia della nebbia d’acqua?
Il rogo di Notre Dame ci ha mostrato quanto siano fragili gli edifici storici e che devono essere protetti. Ci sono in realtà soluzioni per edifici storici e coperture per tetti adeguabili alla tecnologia watermist.
Penso che fra le ragioni per le quali non si proteggono edifici come Notre Dame ci sia il fatto che si pensi che il sistema water mist sia visibile in misura tale da inficiare l’aspetto dell’interno del sito, ma i sistemi di nebulizzazione d’acqua sono in realtà piuttosto invisibili e per di più, facili da installare in retrofit. Un’ altro aspetto da considerare, di solito riguarda i costi, ma direi che un sistema di nebulizzazione d’acqua sarebbe stato molto più economico dei costi di riallestimento della cattedrale.
Cos’è cambiato il dibattito intorno a questa tecnologia in questi 19 anni?
L’interesse è decisamente cresciuto negli anni, così come la lista delle domande da porre. All’inizio molti dubitavano che sarebbe stato possibile avere una completa protezione degli edifici con sistemi di nebulizzazione d’acqua, ma in realtà ora abbiamo praticamente raggiunto quell’obiettivo. I sistemi water mist sono basati sulle prestazioni, sono soluzioni idonee per tutto e quindi molto adattabili, il che significa che qualsiasi progetto venga proposto, il water mist può effettivamente far parte dei sistemi di protezione antincendio.
Quale sarà il contributo italiano a questa edizione?
Ci sarà una presentazione su “Water Mist and high buildings” di Giuseppe Amaro (GAe Engineering) e Massimo Ferretti (Marioff Italia) e uno degli sponsor è Cristanini. A parte questo, vorrei ricordare che i collegamenti tra l’Italia e l’International Water Mist Association sono generalmente molto forti e fruttuosi. Nel 2017 si è svolta a Roma la conferenza internazionale Water Mist e all’inizio di quest’anno abbiamo organizzato un seminario a Milano. Uno dei membri del nostro consiglio è Luciano Nigro di Jensen Hughes, che sarà il moderatore della tavola rotonda. Quindi, come potete vedere, c’è sempre qualcosa in comune tra il vostro paese e la nostra organizzazione!
L’anno scorso, in un’intervista precedente, abbiamo parlato del ventesimo anniversario dell’Associazione IWMA che ha organizzato la Conferenza per diciannove anni. Più anni, più responsabilità? Come è cambiata l’Associazione nel corso di tutto questo tempo?
Le cose possibili da fare come Associazione sono ovviamente infinite, e ci sono molti progetti in corso e sì, più diventi attivo, più lavoro c’è da fare. Abbiamo installato alcuni comitati che svolgono gran parte del lavoro. Il Consiglio di amministrazione è responsabile della strategia generale, il Consiglio scientifico valuta gli Abstract per la Conferenza internazionale e le presentazioni per il Talent Award IWMA e il gruppo di marketing lavora sulle relazioni pubbliche e le strategie di marketing. Così, nel corso degli anni il carico di lavoro è cresciuto, ma allo stesso tempo ci siamo adattati e siamo diventati molto più organizzati e consapevoli man mano che l’interesse del pubblico per la tecnologia water mist è cresciuto via via nel tempo.
IWMA
L’International Water Mist Association è la prima associazione di questo tipo dedicata esclusivamente alla lotta antincendio con acqua nebulizzata e alle tecnologie correlate. IWMA è stata fondata il 4 aprile 1998 e ha un ufficio permanente in attività dall’inizio del 2000. Dalla sede internazionale dell’IWMA ad Amburgo, in Germania, supporta lo sviluppo continuo, la ricerca e l’ingegneria applicativa di sistemi generici di nebulizzazione d’acqua.
Ne sono membri produttori, distributori, compagnie assicurative, istituti scientifici, organismi di approvazione, vigili del fuoco e privati.

This year’s International Water Mist Conference will take place in Berlin, Germany, on 23rd and 24th October.
We have asked to Bettina McDowell, General Manager of IWMA something about this event and the argouments that will take place during the conference. The agenda is online with a manifoldness of topics!
Who did this conference talk to? How many visitor do you think to achieve this year?
We have 150 tickets on offer and obvioulsy hope that all will be gone by the time the registration tool will close on 18th October. We would like to see a large spectrum of people at the conference. There will definitely be reseachers, manufacturers, representatives from insurance companies, representatives from other fire protection associations, representatives from approvals bodies, fire departments etc.
What are the news of this edition, and what are the most important topics?
The focus will lie very much on the fires that in recent years shocked the world the most: Grenfell and Notre Dame. We have some speakers who will talk about tall buildings, roof structures and historic as well as heritage buildings. These presentations will be followed by a panel discussion entitled: Grenfell, Notre Dame – How can water mist help prevent loss of lives, jobs and property?”
Something is changed in the way to discuss about this technology in these 19 years?
The interest has definitely grown over the years, so has the list of applications. In the beginning many doubted that it would be possible to have complete building protection with water mist systems, but actually now we have basically reached that point. Water mist systems are performance-based, they are no one-fits-all solutions and thus very adaptable which means that whatever project is launched water mist can actually be part of the fire protection concept.
This year, the fire accident of Notre Dame will be deepen in the traditional panel discussion. Why this choise? In which way this accident could be put in relation with the water mist technology?
The Notre Dame fire showed us how frail historic buildings are and that they need to be protected. There are actually solutions for historic buildings as well as sensitive roof structures from a water mist perspective. I think one reason for not protecting buildings like Notre Dame is that people think that the system will be visible to an extent that they would destroy the appearance of the interior, but water mist systems are actually quite invisible and on top of that easy to retrofit. Another aspect are usually the costs, but I would say that a water mist system would have been much cheaper than the costs to re-erect the cathedral.
What wil be the italian contribution to this edition?
There will be a presentation on “Water Mist and tall Buildings” by Giuseppe Amaro (GAe Engineering) and Massimo Ferretti (Marioff Italy) and one of the sponsors is Cristanini. Apart from that I would like to mention that the connections between Italy and the International Water Mist Association are generally speaking very strong and fruitful. In 2017, the International Water Mist Conference took place in Rome and earlier this year we organized a seminar in Milan. One of our board members is Luciano Nigro from Jensen Hughes who will actually be the moderator of the panel discussion. So as you can see there is always something going on between your country and our organization.
Last year, in a previous interview, we have talked about the 20th anniversary of IWMA the Association who organized the Conference for nineteen years. More Years, more responsabilities? How the Association is changed at the same time?
The possibilities of what you can do as an association are of course endless and there is a lot of works and yes, the more active you become the more work there is to be done. But we have installed some committees that do a lot of the work. The board of directors is responsible for the overall strategy, the scientific council evaluate the abstracts for the conference and the submissions for the IWMA Young Talent Award and the marketing group works on the public relations and marketing strategies. So over the years the work load has grown but at the same time we have adapted and have become much better organized and confident as the interest in the technology has grown.

The International Water Mist Association is the first association of its kind dedicated exclusively to water mist firefighting and related technologies. The IWMA was founded on 4th April 1998 and began maintaining a permanent office at the beginning of 2000. From the IWMA’s international headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, it supports the continued development, research and applications engineering of generic water mist systems.
Manufacturers, distributors, insurance companies, scientific institutes, approval bodies, fire departments as well as private persons are members of the IWMA.
